The month of April –
the Great Dane's birthday month, will be a busy one as we begin and
end a short season on, in and around the work and the legacy of one
Mr (Aussie) Jørn Utzon.
Enjoy!
What is Slidenight?
Slidenight
is a slightly analog forum for creative people, from writers to botanists,
painters, photographers, journalists to architects, landscapers, beatniks,
artists..and anyone interested... Tuesday nights we get together to
have a few beers, spin a little vinyl and project some images. The idea
is that you will get to see and meet some inspiring people and catch
up with friends at the same time and make yourself at home –it's
that kind of event, if you can't make it this week, get along to the
next one. Everyone is invited so please forward this link on to your
friends...the more the merrier!
The Slidenight Brief
Slidenight is about journeys of the feet or ambulations of the mind.
It is about insight, deviations, process, wrong turns, informality.
It is as much about what moves and inspires
as what pops out at the end. It hopes to be democratic, candid
and casual. We challenge our 'speakers' to deviate from the middle
of the road, veer towards the footpath and mount the kerb. Oh, and
Slidenight is also about sangria...
Past
slidenights includedthe inspiration
of
Richard Goodwin + Sam Marshall (patron saints of slideshows), Choi Ropiha,
Peter Lonergan, Richard Francis-Jones, Farnan Findlay, Zoe Wishart,

and Garth Paterson.

Utzon 1: unrealised dreams; the
Bayview Houses Richard
Leplastrier
Introduction: James Weirick
Between 1958 and 1966, Jørn Utzon designed a series of houses
for his family at Bayview on Pittwater. Though never realised, these
houses confirm that ideas explored on a monumental scale in the Sydney
Opera House could be equally potent at the size of the individual dwelling
and anticipates Utzon’s remarkable series of houses on Majorca.
Sydney architect Richard Leplastrier worked for Jørn Utzon between
1964-66, mostly on the Bayview Houses. Through drawings, images &
stories, Leplastrier will bring these buildings to life.
6-8pm | Museum of Sydney | cnr Phillip & Bridge Streets, Sydney

Utzon 2: vs. the Liberal Government Bill Wheatland
with Sylvia Lawson
Introduction: Elias Duek Cohen
“Went to Yucatan. The ruins are wonderful so why worry. Sydney
Opera House becomes a ruin one day” [Utzon postcard to Bill
Wheatland from New York]
Bill Wheatland was Utzon’s assistant during his latter years in
Sydney. Working closely with Utzon’s junior counsel, Neville Wran,
Wheatland coordinated Utzon’s legal case for unpaid fees against
the Askin Liberal Government.
Touching on threads architectural and political, Sydney writer and author
of the ‘The Outside Story’, Sylvia Lawson, will discuss
with Wheatland these years and the events and
intrigues surrounding this unique piece in Sydney’s cultural and
political history.
6-8pm | The Mint | 10 Macquarie Street Sydney
Wednesday
19th April Utzon 3: after
Sydney: Denmark, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Majorca Alex Popov Introduction: Paul McGillick
Sydney architect Alex Popov worked for Utzon between 1968-78 before
returning to Australia to set up his own much-awarded practice in 1982.
Popov will take us through Utzon’s post-Sydney
work, describing projects in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Denmark,
before taking us to Majorca where the promise of the Bayview Houses
were fully realised.

Utzon 4:the legacy Peter Stutchbury,
Chris Bosse, Peter Poulet
Three wonderfully talented architects with clear but contrasting relationships
to the work and methodology of the Great Dane are asked to unpack
their own work in light of the work of Utzon. This final Slidenight
asks ‘what is the legacy of Utzon’?
